New Job Visas Open Doors for Africans, Including Rwandans, to Work Abroad Without Job Offers

Many Africans, including Rwandans, dream of working abroad for better salaries, career growth, and learning new skills. The belief that “a bird that doesn’t fly never knows where the best seeds grow” drives people to explore life in other countries, hoping to bring back knowledge and experience. However, the challenge of getting a job offer before securing a work visa often holds many back. But now, some countries are making it easier by offering work visas without requiring a job offer in advance.

Countries like Germany, Austria, and Portugal now offer job seeker visas, allowing individuals to enter their countries and look for jobs on their own. This gives job seekers a chance to explore different job opportunities in-person, making it easier to find work.

Germany: Job Seeker Visa for 6 Months

The country offers a Job Seeker Visa that lets you live in Germany for up to six months while looking for a job. If you secure employment during this time, you can apply for a work visa and stay in the country longer.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Completed academic or vocational training.
  • 5 years of work experience.
  • Sufficient financial support during the stay.
  • A recognized degree in Germany.

You will need a valid passport, proof of accommodation, health insurance, and a bank balance of at least €5,682 (approx. 4.8 million RWF) to support your stay.

2. Portugal

Portugal launched its Job Seeker Visa in June 2022, allowing individuals to stay for up to four months to search for employment. If you don’t find a job within that time, you can extend your stay for an additional two months. If you still don’t find employment, you must leave the country but can reapply after a year.

To apply, you must have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent. Financial proof and other supporting documents are also required, including a valid passport and police clearance.

3. Sweden

Sweden has introduced a Job Seeker Visa for highly qualified professionals, allowing them to stay for up to nine months while searching for a job or starting a business. To apply, you must hold an advanced degree like a master’s or Ph.D., and be able to financially support yourself during your stay.

4. Austria

Austria offers a six-month Job Seeker Visa for highly qualified workers. To qualify, applicants must score 70 points based on their qualifications, work experience, language skills, and age. Austria looks for professionals with specialized skills, such as senior management experience or research expertise.

If you’re an African or Rwandan looking to explore better job opportunities abroad, these job seeker visas can be a great way to start. Without the need for a job offer in advance, you can live in these countries and explore different career options. Whether it’s Germany, Portugal, Sweden, or Austria, the door is open for those who are qualified and ready to take the next step.
