Rwandans living abroad play an essential role in the development of their homeland. They actively participate in all sectors, contribute to national growth, vote in elections, and celebrate national events. Importantly, they have also brought the cherished tradition of Umuganda to their new homes.

Umuganda, translated from Kinyarwanda as “coming together in common purpose to achieve an outcome,” is when Rwandans unite to work for the good of their neighborhoods and the nation. On the last Saturday of every month, from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM, businesses close, and traffic stops as citizens across Rwanda pick up shovels and hoes to improve their communities.

This inspiring tradition fosters a sense of responsibility and connection among people. The Rwandan community in Portland, Maine, has embraced Umuganda, continuing this beautiful tradition abroad to promote common good and community spirit.
