Germany is thinking about a new plan to manage migrants who enter the European Union illegally. The plan suggests sending these migrants to Rwanda. This idea is part of Germany’s efforts to control the number of refugees coming into the country, especially after a serious incident that caused public concern.
Joachim Stamp, a German official who focuses on migration, proposed this idea. He said that Rwanda already has facilities for asylum seekers. These were originally set up for a plan by Britain, which was later canceled. Now, Stamp believes that the European Union could use these facilities, with the help of the United Nations, to process asylum claims.
Stamp explained that this plan would target people who enter the EU through its eastern borders, which is about 10,000 people each year. He said that Rwanda is willing to help with this process.
There are new rules in the European Union to manage migration, but they will not fully start until 2025. This new plan is part of Germany’s larger efforts to handle migration in a fair and organized way.
