On January 23rd, Rwandans, both within the country and abroad, convened at various locations for the national dialogue meeting. Beyond the national borders, the Polish diaspora served as a representative assembly, symbolizing the unity of Rwandans across the globe.
For the 19th consecutive year, the Umushyikirano meeting delves into discussions on the country’s development, aiming to enhance the quality of life for Rwandans. The gathering focuses on the concerted efforts directed towards finding solutions to challenges that pose a threat to the nation. Moreover, the meeting will provide an opportunity to collectively assess the progress made in terms of unity and reconciliation and special attention will be given to commemorating the 30th anniversary of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsis. Additionally, discussions will kick off on empowering the youth to play a leading role in shaping the Rwanda we aspire to build.
His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, formally inaugurated the National Dialogue Conference and extended a warm welcome to all participants in attendance.
During his address on the first day of Umushyikirano, President Kagame primarily delved into the narrative of 30 years ago when our nation emerged from the 1994 genocide against the Tutsis, He addressed the country’s security concerns and entrusted the youth with a specific task.
“This year, our nation has numerous initiatives geared towards progress. Reflecting on the past 30 years, we pay tribute to our compatriots who tragically lost their lives without cause. Despite some misunderstanding and those who may not fully comprehend, it is essential for us to acknowledge the significance and actively prevent any attempts to distort our history.”
“In the last 30 years, there are important things that we have to think about, including thinking about the violence that happened in our country. Those who were born at that time are now 30 years old, whether they are here or outside the country, they constitute an integral part of our nation, collectively envisioning a transformation in the way we choose to live.”
“You must feel the weight of the responsibility not only in constructing our nation but also in nurturing and building your own families.”, President Kagame addressed the young generation.
“You should feel that there is no need to apologize for who you are, you have to fight for what you are, what you want to be, no one will give it to you as a gift. Who hasn’t learned a lesson from this?”, He continued.
“Remember that the entire world is grappling with challenges, and even those who attempt to give you lessons struggle to find answers to their own problems, and then they come to tell you about democracy but fail to apply it effectively to resolve their own issues.Let’s do what we can at home as it should be done.”
Talking about security, President Kagame reminded all Rwandans that they rightfully belong to their own homeland, and that they should do their things calmly and at peace.
“This is your home! Conduct yourselves with the certainty that tomorrow will come. Where else would you find peace? It’s apparent that anywhere else you attempt to go, they become weary of your presence and send you back; they are fatigued and burdened with their own problems.”, He emphasized.
