Kwibuka30: Honoring the Past, Seeking Justice; Rwandan Ambassador’s Address at Kwibuka30 Ceremony in Warsaw, Poland

During the 30th commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsis in Warsaw, Poland, held at the Jewish Museum on April 26, 2024, the Ambassador of Rwanda to Poland, Prof. Amb. Shyaka Anastase, made a significant declaration regarding the pursuit of justice for genocide crimes. 

He revealed that over 1000 indictments have been issued for individuals suspected of these crimes, emphasized the importance of collaboration between countries harboring these suspects and the Rwandan government to ensure they are brought to justice

The event in Warsaw drew a diverse audience, including Rwandan residents, predominantly young university students, Polish government officials, representatives of various countries, military units from different Embassies, investors engaged with Rwanda, and others.

In his address, Ambassador Prof. Shyaka highlighted the ongoing efforts to hold genocide suspects accountable, urging countries in Europe, America, and Africa to take action.

Reflecting on the root causes of the Genocide against the Tutsis in Rwanda, he underscored the role of flawed leadership and genocidal ideologies. However, he emphasized the transformative power of good governance, which has fostered progress, peace, and unity in Rwanda. 

Ambassador Prof. Shyaka emphasized the vital role of unity in safeguarding the nation’s future, particularly as Rwanda’s population is predominantly young.

Acknowledging the irreversible nature of history, he commended countries that have ratified international agreements against genocide and integrated them into their legal frameworks. 

The 30th commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsis, occurring amidst strengthened bilateral ties between Rwanda and Poland, spanning education, technology, politics, and investment.

The commemoration, spanning one hundred days from April 7, 2024, serves as a poignant reminder of the atrocities of the past and the collective commitment to honor the memory of the victims and build a more unified and resilient future.
