Rwandans have been migrating to different parts of the world for various socioeconomic reasons, creating a strong diaspora community in countries across Europe, North America, and neighboring African nations. Over the years, these Rwandans living abroad have contributed significantly to the development of their home country in various sectors.

One of the challenges that the Rwandan diaspora has faced is accessing reliable banking services while abroad. In the past, it was difficult to use Rwandan banks from outside the country. However, as Rwanda continues to grow and innovate, Equity Bank has stepped in with a solution. They have introduced services that allow Rwandans living abroad to save, withdraw, and manage their finances just like they would at home.

During the FPR Inkotanyi Europe Retreat in Copenhagen, Denmark, an Equity Bank employee shared the importance of this service, saying, “At Equity Bank, we are innovative. We are the first to bring banking services closer to the Rwandan diaspora, allowing them to access special services like discounted loans. It’s easy to use, and they can fully manage their accounts online.”

The event created excitement among Rwandans living in Europe. Many were eager to open accounts with Equity Bank, appreciating the convenience of accessing Rwandan banking services from abroad. Iwacu Times interviewed several attendees, including Kurama Pius, who shared his thoughts: “I opened my account today, and it’s great! I was planning to travel back to Rwanda to do this, but now it’s easy. I hope there will be a permanent representative and mobilisation here so more of us can open accounts.”

Egide Sadiki, representing Equity Bank, responded to this feedback during the event, stating, “We’re here not just to open accounts but also to gather ideas and suggestions from our customers. We’ll take these insights back to Rwanda and address them with the bank’s leadership.”

Equity Bank offers several services for the diaspora, including the Equity Diaspora Account, loans, online banking platforms like Equity Online and EazzyBiz, and a range of money transfer solutions. Customers also enjoy benefits such as no maintenance fees, no minimum balance, free incoming transfers, and access to credit cards and loans at competitive interest rates.

Rwandans abroad can easily open accounts, manage their finances, and even get a Visa card upon opening. Equity Bank has made banking more accessible, supporting the diaspora in staying connected to Rwanda’s financial system.
